Building Basement Inspections Using Remote Robotics | Safer, Smarter Internal Building Surveys

Inspecting internal building basements can present significant challenges due to restricted access, low headroom, poor lighting, dust, and confined environments. In many cases, traditional inspection methods or even aerial inspection technology are not suitable.

For this project, the basement's limited headroom and dusty conditions meant that a ground-based robotic platform was the most appropriate solution. Equipped with a high-definition camera, powerful LED lighting, and robust tracked mobility, the system was able to navigate the basement safely while capturing detailed visual information of structural elements, building services, drainage infrastructure, pipework, cable routes, and areas showing signs of deterioration.

This remote inspection approach eliminated the need for personnel to enter potentially hazardous areas, significantly reducing health and safety risks while maintaining a high standard of inspection. It also minimised disruption to building operations, reduced survey time, and removed the need for costly temporary access equipment.

The inspection data provides engineers, building owners, and facilities managers with a comprehensive understanding of the basement's condition. High-resolution images and video create a permanent digital record that can be reviewed remotely, supporting defect identification, planned preventative maintenance, refurbishment planning, and long-term asset management. Future inspections can also be compared against the original survey to monitor deterioration and measure changes over time.
